Introduction
In the Baltic Coast region of Germany, climate change now demands substantial measures toward climate adaptation. Already, stabilizing the shoreline requires considerable investment funds, and climate-dependent industries, such as tourism and agriculture, constitute important sources of income and business opportunities. The protection of this region’s environment and native species is also of international significance. With the accelerated rise of the sea level, changes in the frequency and intensity of storms and floodings are becoming apparent. In addition, a change in modified currents and its effects on sediment transport will influence the development of the coastline. Consequently, infrastructure and economic activity near the coast could be affected in many ways. Decreased water qualities due to higher average temperatures as well as occasional increased nutrient loads due to modified drainage behaviors of tributaries are anticipated. The sensitivity of the resource infrastructure as well as the scarcity of available resources call for credible investigations into climate-related changes and increased awareness of the need for adaptive measures.
