Moroccan Mediterranean Coast

The coastal provinces of Nador and Berkane are the RADOST partner regions in Morocco. The area is rich with biodiversity and is home to five urban centers (Nador, Beni Nsar, Melilla, Saidia und Berkane). The beaches are mostly sandy and many are important for tourism. Fishing, aquaculture, agriculture and tourism are the key economic sectors.

Most economic activities are concentrated in a narrow coastal band that lies less than three meters above the sea level. Research has recently indicated that a sea level rise between 20 and 105 cm is possible by the year 2100. Estimates indicate that the coastal protection and adaptation measures will require high financial inputs. At the same time, forecasts predict the salinisation of freshwater resources which are already scarce.
The RADOST partner institution in the region is the Department of Resource Management and the Environment at the Ecole Nationale Forestière d'Ingenieurs (ENFI). The department is a partner in an international research project on the development of adaptation strategies.
The partnership with the region was established by the Ecologic Institute.
