National and European political setting / national and international exchange

In this module, international and inter-regional exchanges of information and experiences are organized. Moreover, regional adaptation strategies are compared with the policy developments at the national and EU level.

Climate adaptation is a dynamically developing policy field. Until recently, climate change mitigation had been the main focal point of climate policy in the developed countries, but now adaptation to climate change is also firmly recognized as a parallel priority. It is clear that adaptation strategies and specific measures for the unavoidable consequences of climate change must be developed.

In recent years, several adaptation initiatives and projects have emerged in Europe and worldwide. These range from higher-level political strategies to applied research projects and programmes at local, regional, national, European, and international levels.

In order to effectively integrate the RADOST project into this dynamic policy field, the project will continuously evaluate relevant developments at various levels. At the same time, the project results will be fed into other existing adaptation activities. Two areas are especially important in this regard:

  • The development of policy frameworks at the national and European level. This includes adaptation strategies such as the German national adaptation strategy (Deutsche Anpassungsstrategie (DAS)) the EU strategy development  with its White Paper on Adaptation, as well as regulatory frameworks that address adaptation questions in individual sectors (for example, the European Water Framework Directive, the Floods Directive and the Marine Strategy Directive).
  • Experience and information exchange with other adaptation projects in Germany as well as other European and non-European countries. At the national level this includes other regional KLIMZUG projects, whereas at the international level, cooperation with a number of partner regions is planned.
